The Khaled Hosseini Foundation
Founded by the best-selling author of The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, the Khaled Hosseini Foundation is a nonprofit organization that provides humanitarian assistance to the people of Afghanistan to help alleviate suffering and build healthy communities. The foundation gives priority to programs and projects providing relief and shelter for families, economic opportunities for women, and education for children.
Khaled Hosseini was inspired to create a foundation after visiting Afghanistan in 2007 with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. While there, Hosseini met families who lived on less than a dollar a day, who spent winters in holes dug underground for shelter, and whose villages routinely lost 10 to 15 children to the elements every winter and summer. These people had little shelter and no access to health-care facilities, schools, food, or jobs. With his foundation, Hosseini hopes to make a meaningful and enduring difference, focusing on projects that benefit women and children, two groups that have suffered more than any other within the beleaguered country and are the backbone of Afghanistan’s future.
